freelance incomeWhen one says they’re a freelance writer it often prompts the question, “What do you write?” I know freelancers who write materials and take on projects that I choose not to work on, and vice versa. My choices in income sources stem from personal preferences. They have included:

  1. Freelance journalism. A number of article writing opportunities fall under this umbrella. Some freelancers specialize in health and wellness writing, others are brave and focus on investigative journalism and exposés. Freelance journalism can include column writing, newspaper features, magazine articles (consumer and trade), sports writing, reviews, op-ed pieces, political coverage, and more.
  2. Web content. Custom content creation is basically ghostwriting copy for the internet. This is another field that encompasses many areas: Websites (home pages, subpages, main navigation areas), FAQs, landing pages, blog development, bios, and search-optimized case studies and white papers.
  3. Press releases. Properly drafted and transmitted press releases help to effectively spread the word about an individual or organization. Set yourself apart from other press release writers and offer transmission services. Connections with editors, newsrooms, and online wires can pay long-term dividends in publicity.

I started my writing business based on the above income sources. How does one get started in each of these areas? How much should you expect to get paid or charge? I cover this in my teleseminar this week: Freelance Writing 101 LITE. I’m calling it a ‘lite’ version because it’s a condensed version of my half-day freelance class.

Registration for my teleseminar Freelance Writing 101 LITE closes tomorrow at midnight. The session starts at 1PM EST on Friday, August 12. This is a 45-minute session followed by a 15-minute Q&A. If you can’t make it on the scheduled day/time, registrants will receive details for accessing a recording of the session. Learn how to get started earning an income from freelance writing. I’ll share what I did to start and maintain a sustainable writing income. Half of this session will cover freelance journalism and half will cover custom content writing. I’m celebrating 6 years of writing full-time this year and I’ve gathered some tips to share. Advance registration required – register here. $29

Did you know you could have pre-registered for the seminar? I offer early registration to my newsletter subscribers.
