Every Thursday night the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences hosts a Science Cafe in their restaurant The Daily Planet. Occasionally members of Living Poetry participate with these events and merge verse with the science discussion.
This past spring I attended one of these events where an evolutionary sleep researcher from Duke presented. Myself and poets Bart Barker, Anna Weaver, and Angie Kirby participated. We listened to the researcher and near the end of the event we each wrote a poem based on the presentation. You can watch the science cafe video and see us take the stage at the 1:04:00 mark.
This Thursday, August 11th at 7PM is our next collaborative event. NASA Solar System Ambassador Tony Rice will speak about the Juno Mission, the orbiter that is currently collecting data of Jupiter’s moons.
Attendees are welcome to pen verse and share with the audience, or you can simply come and observe.
If you’re unable to attend, you can stream the event live on YouTube – or check the same link after the event for the recording. Those who plan to be there this Thursday–get there early! It will be a PACKED event. It’s been standing room only every time I’ve attended and I imagine with the popularity of this week’s topic it will attract even more folks.
