Me finding the poem at the memorial.
Although I traveled with no poetic intent, I came across poetry this past weekend in Washington, DC. It seems quite fitting that it’s Veteran’s Day and this poem was left by serendipity at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

Poetry at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

The Lincoln Memorial
Did you know Abraham Lincoln was, among many great things, also a poet? Abraham Lincoln’s poetry ranged from hunting to love:

Honest Abe
To Rosa
You are young, and I am older;
You are hopeful, I am not –
Enjoy life, ere it grow colder –
Pluck the roses ere they rot.
Teach your beau to heed the lay –
That sunshine soon is lost in shade –
That now’s as good as any day –
To take thee, Rosa, ere she fade.

Washington Memorial
Wow, didn’t expect that. That’s some beautiful stuff. You look at the great edifices nations erect, and sometimes you forget the tender human sentiment hiding beneath — poetry forum
Thanks, Billy. It’s amazing how many stories are behind each name on the memorial. Those monuments are there for great purpose!
